Twilight Times info

Twilight Times

Twilight is the period of diffused natural light before sunrise and after sunset, produced by sunlight scattering through the upper atmosphere. It is divided into three stages based on how far the Sun is below the horizon.

Civil Twilight

The Sun is between 0° and 6° below the horizon. Enough natural light remains for most outdoor activities without artificial lighting. The horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars may begin to appear. This is the stage most people perceive as "nearly sunrise" or "just after sunset."

Nautical Twilight

The Sun is between 6° and 12° below the horizon. The sea horizon remains visible and a good number of stars are apparent — conditions historically used for celestial navigation aboard ships. Artificial lighting becomes necessary for detailed tasks on the ground.

Astronomical Twilight

The Sun is between 12° and 18° below the horizon. Scattered solar light is negligible and the sky is dark enough for most astronomical observations. Once the Sun is more than 18° below the horizon the sky is considered fully dark.

Duration

The length of each twilight stage, expressed in minutes. At equatorial latitudes twilight is brief (~20–30 minutes per stage). Near the poles in summer, the Sun may never reach 18° below the horizon, causing twilight to last all night long — a phenomenon known as the midnight sun.
