Planet Positions info

Planet Positions

The eight planets of the Solar System are continuously tracked from the observer's location, showing their current sky position, visibility status, and distances. Data is computed for the exact date and time selected.

Visibility

Whether a planet is currently above the horizon at the observer's location. A planet is considered observable when its altitude is positive and sky conditions permit. Planets with low altitude (<10°) near the horizon are subject to significant atmospheric distortion and dimming.

Planet Direction

The azimuth of the planet at the selected moment — a compass bearing measured clockwise from true North (0°–360°). Combined with altitude, it gives the precise sky coordinates needed to locate the planet by eye or with a telescope.

Altitude

The angle of the planet above the observer's horizon in degrees. Positive values indicate the planet is above the horizon and potentially visible; negative values mean it is below. A higher altitude generally means better observing conditions and less atmospheric interference.

Rise & Set Times

The local times at which the planet clears and then drops below the horizon. These times shift by several minutes each day as the planet advances in its orbit. A planet is best observed when it is highest in the sky — roughly midway between rise and set.

Distance to Earth

The current straight-line distance between Earth and the planet in kilometres. This changes continuously as both planets move along their orbits. Distance is smallest at opposition (outer planets) or inferior conjunction (inner planets), when the planet can appear largest and brightest.

Distance to Sun

The current distance between the planet and the Sun in kilometres. Useful for understanding the planet's position in the Solar System and predicting orbital events such as opposition, conjunction, or perihelion passage.
