Moon Phases info

Moon Phases

The Moon passes through a continuous cycle of phases over approximately 29.5 days — the synodic month — as it orbits Earth and the illuminated half faces different angles toward the observer. This cycle governs tides, traditional calendars, and many natural rhythms.

New Moon

The Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun, so the illuminated face is directed away from Earth. The Moon is invisible at night and, in rare geometric alignment, can cause a solar eclipse.

First Quarter

The Moon has completed one quarter of its orbit; the right half of its face (in the Northern Hemisphere) is lit. It is prominent in the afternoon and evening sky, rising around noon and setting around midnight.

Full Moon

The Moon is opposite the Sun and its entire Earth-facing side is illuminated. It rises near sunset, reaches its highest point at midnight, and sets near sunrise. At perfect alignment it can cause a lunar eclipse.

Last Quarter

Three-quarters through the cycle; the left half of the face is lit. It rises around midnight and is visible in the morning sky, setting near noon. Also called Third Quarter.

Illumination

The fraction of the Moon's visible face currently lit by the Sun, expressed as a percentage. It waxes from 0% at New Moon to 100% at Full Moon and wanes back to 0%, completing the cycle roughly every 29.5 days.

Phase Duration

The number of days between one primary phase and the next, approximately 7.4 days on average. The exact figure varies slightly because the Moon's elliptical orbit means it moves faster near perigee and slower near apogee.
