Moonrise & Moonset info

Moonrise & Moonset

The Moon rises and sets each day due to Earth's rotation, but unlike the Sun, it appears roughly 50 minutes later each day as it advances along its monthly orbit. Its position, brightness, and visibility change continuously across the ~29.5-day lunar cycle.

Moonrise

The moment the upper limb of the Moon clears the eastern horizon. On some days near New Moon the Moon rises and sets during daylight hours, making it nearly invisible despite being above the horizon.

Moonset

The moment the Moon drops below the western horizon. The daily delay in moonrise and moonset is caused by the Moon's prograde orbital motion of approximately 13° per day relative to the stars.

Moon Direction

The azimuth of the Moon at the selected moment — a compass bearing clockwise from true North (0°–360°). The Moon's path across the sky tilts with its orbital inclination of roughly 5° relative to the ecliptic, so its rising and setting directions shift notably across the month.

Moon Altitude

The angle of the Moon above (positive) or below (negative) the horizon in degrees at the selected date and time. A negative altitude means the Moon is not yet risen or has already set.

Moon Distance

The distance from Earth's centre to the Moon's centre in kilometres. The Moon's elliptical orbit causes this to vary between roughly 356,000 km at perigee and 406,000 km at apogee — a difference that affects its apparent diameter and the strength of its tidal influence.

Moon Illumination

The percentage of the Moon's Earth-facing side currently lit by the Sun. It rises from 0% at New Moon through 50% at First Quarter to 100% at Full Moon and back, completing the cycle in ~29.5 days.

Moon Phase

The named stage of the lunar cycle defined by the angular relationship between Sun, Earth, and Moon. The four primary phases are New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter, each separated by approximately 7.4 days.
