Sunrise & Sunset info

Sunrise & Sunset

Sunrise and sunset mark the two daily transitions between daylight and darkness, determined by Earth's rotation, axial tilt, and the observer's geographic position. Times vary with latitude, season, and local horizon obstructions.

Sunrise

The moment the upper edge of the Sun first crosses the eastern horizon. Atmospheric refraction bends sunlight around the curve of the Earth, making the Sun visible roughly two minutes before it would appear in a vacuum. The exact time shifts daily and depends on the observer's latitude and longitude.

Sunset

The moment the upper edge of the Sun disappears below the western horizon. Refraction similarly extends its visibility past the geometric setting point. Sunset completes the day's arc across the sky and initiates twilight.

Sun Direction

The azimuth of the Sun at a given moment — a compass bearing measured clockwise from true North (0°–360°). Near the equinoxes the Sun rises close to due East (90°) and sets near due West (270°). At local noon in the Northern Hemisphere it is approximately South (~180°). The value shifts with the season and the observer's latitude.

Sun Altitude

The angle between the Sun and the observer's horizon, measured in degrees. Positive values place the Sun above the horizon; negative values indicate it is below. Altitude is 0° at the exact moments of sunrise and sunset and peaks at its highest point during solar noon.

Sun Distance

The straight-line distance between the centres of Earth and the Sun in kilometres. Earth's elliptical orbit causes this to vary throughout the year — approximately 147 million km at perihelion (early January, closest approach) and 152 million km at aphelion (early July, farthest point).

Day Length

The total duration of daylight between sunrise and sunset, expressed in hours and minutes. It varies continuously with latitude and time of year. Near the equinoxes, day length approaches 12 hours everywhere on Earth. Near the poles during summer, daylight can persist for 24 hours; during winter it can shrink to zero.
